Based on a true historical event, the film tells the story of one of the most famous rebellions in American history: the knight of Newton. Knight, a native of Mississippi, broke away from the southern army during the civil war, formed a group of soldiers and founded a state in his home state called the free state of Jones. The knight not only wanted to marry a black slave and refused to return to the confederacy, but also in Mississippi, where the confederate government's emancipation of slaves was rare in the United States, he became a local legend in Mississippi.
