Sam (Sean Penn), an adult who works at starbucks, is only seven years old. By chance, he took in a stray girl. The woman helped Sam give birth to a daughter and disappeared without a trace. He named his daughter Lucy (Dakota Fanning) because he liked the beatles' "Lucy in the sky with diamonds." He is very attached to his children. As Lucy grew up under Sam's careful care, she found that her father could not read a slightly more complicated story. She is refusing to grow up and wants to be like her father. The life of father and daughter is so happy. Education officials in the area found this special family, they thought Sam was unable to take care of Lucy, so they took Lucy away. Heartbroken Sam wants to earn Lucy's custody, so he goes to the best lawyer in the area...
