Jeffery (James Stewart) is a photojournalist who takes risks and travels around the world to shoot. After an accident that left him with a broken foot, he now has to settle down at home, where his daily routine is taken care of by paramedics and a stylish girlfriend (Grace Kelly). It was a hot summer day, and for the cool air the Windows were wide open, and it was jeffery's recipe for boredom to observe the daily lives of the various characters of the house on the opposite gallery.One of the families was a businessman and his wife. The wife was ill in bed and they often quarreled. Yet unusual events have followed. Jeffery noticed that the merchant had gone out three times in the evening, and that the next morning he had sorted through a pile of saws and knives. And the neighbor's puppy, also to the downstairs flowerbed to dig and dig, soon was cruelly broken neck. The businessman's wife, who had been missing for several days.As events grew more and more bizarre, the incisive jeffery became suspicious of the businessman. But he was unable to move because of his broken leg, so she and her friends joined in the exciting case solving program.
