Based on Angela Thomas' novel of the same name, focusing on race and police brutality. Starr Carter, a 16-year-old black actress, was at a party one night when she met her childhood best friend Khalil. Khalil drove her home after the party. The two were stopped by a police officer on the road. The incident quickly made national headlines, with Khalil described as a "thug, a drug dealer" and the police appearing to have little interest in investigating. A group of protesters took to the streets and turned the neighborhood where Starr lives into a war zone. Everyone was trying to figure out what was going on. The only person who knew the truth was Starr.
