The film is adapted from the novel of the same name by American writer walter Ken. Ryan bryngham (George Clooney) works for a company in Omaha, Nebraska that specializes in lay-offs for other companies. On a regular layoff trip, Ryan meets alex (Vera Farmiga Vera Farmiga), a business beauty, and they fall in love at first sight, but are content with casual sex. Meanwhile, Natalie (Anna Kendrick), a new college student at Ryan, is being courted by the company's President, who is pushing for changes in remote layoff through video.
