The protagonist Pip was orphaned at a young age, raised by his violent older sister, and learned blacksmithing from his brother-in-law Joe, who served as both mentor and friend. He contentedly lived the life of an outcast. By chance, he was selected to work at Satis House in town, employed by the wealthy noblewoman Miss Havisham. There he met the young and haughty Estella. Under Miss Havisham's subtle, layered hints—her own heart shrouded in darkness—Pip fell in love with Estella. His mindset shifted, and he began striving to become a member of the upper class.
