By chance, Sidney (Philip Baker Hall) meets a man named John (John C. Reilly), who takes the destitute John to a casino and teaches him the art of gambling, hoping that John's luck will change. At the casino, Sidney meets Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow), a waitress who violates the casino's rules by engaging in carnal dealings with the customers.
