The death of George (Ben Affleck), a popular Hollywood superstar, leaves his fiancée Leroy (Robin Tunney) and his mother Helen (Lois Smith) broken-hearted. The official report is that George died by suicide, however, there is doubt in Helen's mind about this conclusion.In order to find out the truth about her son's death, Helen hires private investigator Louis (Adrien Brody). As the investigation unfolds, Louis discovers that George had an affair with Toni (Diane Lane), the wife of MGM Productions president Eddie (Bob Hoskins), which seems to be the key to George's death. Just as Louis is getting closer to the truth, danger is approaching him, and in the shadows, it seems that there are powerful bigwigs who don't want Louis to find the answers he's trying to get.
