Sam Tyler, a Manchester police detective, is knocked to the ground by a car while working on a case, and wakes up from a coma to find that his 4×4 has been transformed into a 30 year old model, and that inside the car are the papers transferring him to the Manchester Police Department. It turns out that he's back in 1973, still working in the same building, under another detective, Gene Hunt, who's a DCI (Detective Chief Instructor) and Sam is a DI (Detective Inspector), and they're like team leaders and vice-chiefs, with a couple of detectives under them, including WPC Woman Police Constable.
