The story takes place in 2369. Deep Space Nine was originally a mining station constructed by the Cardassians after their occupation of Bajor. Once the Cardassians had completely depleted its resources, they abandoned the mining station and departed. With insufficient resources to rebuild their homeworld, the Bajorans were forced to seek assistance from the United Federation of Planets.
