During a routine patrol in deep space, Captain Picard of the USS Enterprise received a classified message stating that the Borg had allied with forces from other star systems and were preparing to attack Earth. Because Captain Picard had been captured and assimilated by the enemy, Starfleet did not fully trust him and did not assign him to the mission. Defying orders, Picard joined the battle. Subsequently, the Enterprise followed the Borg's temporal vortex back to the 21st century to thwart their attempt to alter humanity's alien developmental history and conquer Earth.
