In 1916, as the First World War raged fiercely on the Western Front, the Ramsden Choral Society in Yorkshire lost most of its male members, who had all been called up for military service. The ambitious committee resolved to press on, deciding to recruit local young men to fill the vacancies in their ranks. At the same time, they had to hire a new choral conductor, with Dr. Henry Guthrie emerging as the most promising candidate.
