This is the story of the Radlett family, an upper-class British household during the First and Second World Wars. The narrative centers on Linda, the family's daughter, and her cousin Fanny. Both women are initially consumed by love and marriage, actively seeking their ideal partners. When Fanny decides to settle down, Linda continues to follow her heart. She first falls for a staunch Tory politician, then a passionate communist, and finally commits to French Duke Fabrice. Their friendship, however, faces its own trials.
