Wendy (Laura Linney) is a 38-year-old playwright living in New York City who can barely make ends meet with her job, is not married, maintains an inappropriate relationship with a married man, and has a life of chaos; she has a brother, Jon (Philip Seymour Hoffman), who lives a dashing life in Buffalo as a college professor, seems to have a spring in his step, but has troubles of his own - his girlfriend is about to leave him to go back to Eastern Europe, and he is saddened, but doesn't stay because he doesn't want to get married.
