Beloved by his students, bill kincaid (Edward Norton), a successful professor of classical philosophy, rushes back to his hometown of little Dixie, Tulsa, Oklahoma, after hearing the news of the death of his twin brother, brady (Edward Norton). Brady's buddy bolger (Tim Blake Nelson) picks him up at the airport, only to find that brady was not killed by a crossbow. Although bill is angry, but still agree to go to a nursing home the next day to visit his mother (Susan Sarandon) who he has not seen for more than 10 years. Brady introduces bill to janet (Keri Russell), an English teacher at a local high school, as he shows bill around a seventh generation of soilless hydroponic high-quality marijuana he designed and assembled. Bill is about to return to school when he learns that he is involved in the murder of a jewish drug Lord (Richard Dreyfuss).
