The story opens with Kitty, the heroine, accepting a marriage proposal from walter Fane, a tacitly spoken doctor, in order to escape the glitzy but empty social world of 1920s London and prevent herself from becoming an old maid. After taking Kitty to Shanghai, Finn quickly devoted himself to his bacteriology. Lonely Kitty has an affair with an attractive married man, Charlie Townson, and when Finn finds out, he is devastated. In a desperate attempt to get his revenge and get his life back together, Fane takes Kitty to a remote town ravaged by cholera. Walter moved from his spotless lab to the front lines of the epidemic, where he slowly helped bring it under control. Kitty began to do volunteer work in a convent and hospital held by a French nun abbot, and gradually found the courage and meaning of life. Walter and Kitty are finally able to open up to each other, but as they grow closer, Walter is struck by cholera. Walter's life and death determine whether their new-found passion will turn into an eternal love...
