BBC One's three-part mini-series "A Very English Scandal" is based on A real story by Jeremy Thorpe. In the late 1960s, when Britain was only just decriminalizing homosexuality, Jeremy Thorpe (Hugh Grant), leader of the Liberal Party and the youngest leader of a British political party in 100 years, was hiding a secret - he had a gay ex-man, Norman Scott (Ben Whishaw).As long as Norman Scott is alive, this is a threat to Jeremy Thorpe, so he plots a pre-murder, but it doesn't work, and he is accused of attempted murder. This made Jeremy Thorpe the first British politician to stand trial for murder, and it became public that he was gay. Jeremy Thorpe was eventually acquitted, but ended his political career.
