Twenty-one-year-old William Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) is persuaded by his best friend William Pitt (Benedict Cumberbatch) to join the British Parliament. Together, the two men led the anti-slavery movement, waging fierce battles against their opponents. But Wilberforce's anti-slavery bill was rejected by Congress. An exhausted Wilberforce, exhausted by the infighting in Parliament, suffered from colitis. In 1797, when he is in the country at a friend's home to recuperate, he meets his admirer Barbara Spooner (Romola Garai). Wilberforce told her about the cause he was fighting for, and they fell in love and married. Finally, in 1807, part of Wilberforce's bill was passed, and the anti-slavery movement began to grow.
