Jasmine's (Cate Blanchett) husband, Hal, is arrested and imprisoned for business fraud and ends his life in prison, leaving her penniless to join her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins) in San Francisco. After an instant return to the world of ordinary people from a life of money, Jasmine suffers a nervous breakdown, often talking to herself and dwelling on her memories of the past, out of step with everyone around her. She doesn't like Ginger's ex-husband Aguie, and she doesn't like Ginger's current boyfriend Chill. Jasmine gets a job at a dentist's office and goes back to school, but her life is still a mess. Jasmine's life seems to be getting back on track, and just as they are about to buy a wedding ring, Ginger's ex-husband Augie shows up and makes her world go dark again ....
