From the perspective of a witness and narrator, Charles Ryder (Jeremy Irons), the film follows the life and fate of a Catholic family at Brideshead Manor in pre-World War II England, as the estate rises and falls outside London. At Oxford University, Charles made friends with the aristocratic background status of the young man San Bastian Frette (Anthony Andrews). St. Bastian's demanding mother, the Marchioness of Marchman (Claire Bloom), presides over Brideshead Manor, which is full of devout Catholics. But the scandal of the father abandoning his wife and living in Venice for a long time left a mark of shame on his children from an early age and distorted their nature. St. Bastian, who spent his days in wine and extravagance, invited Charles to one of his family dinners at the manor. Charles has a crush on St. Bastian's younger sister, Julia (Diana Quick).
