Sam (Tobey Maguire) goes to prison to pick up his brother Tommy (Jake Gyllenhaal), who has completed his sentence. When he returns home, his mother gives him a warm welcome, but his father is cynical. Sam is serving in the US Marine Corps and is being sent to Afghanistan, so the party is a send-off for Sam in addition to a reception for Tommy. The father always compares the perfect Sam to the poor Tommy, causing the latter to leave in anger. Sam reluctantly says goodbye to his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) and his two daughters and heads off to the war. Unfortunately, the Blackhawk helicopter he is travelling in is shot down and he and his subordinates are taken prisoner. Forced by the Afghan mob to give in, Sam kills his subordinates with his own hands, an event that leaves him in a state of conflict. The family is in mourning as the rear office believes Sam has been killed in action. Determined to change, Tommy slowly settles into his family, not only easing the relationship between father and son, but also developing a subtle bond with Grace and the children as they comfort each other. But then comes the news that Sam has survived...
