Detective novelist Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) becomes acquainted with NYPD detective Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) over a serial killer case, and takes a keen interest in her. Despite Beckett's strong objections, Castle eventually relies on her well-developed connections to "stick around" at the NYPD, working behind Beckett on cases to find inspiration for her writing. The two men, who have very different personalities and backgrounds, gradually develop a tacit understanding in their constant fights and friction, and become the best partners in the world. However, Castle ignores Beckett's objections and privately investigates Beckett's mother's murder many years ago, which at one point leads to a stalemate in their relationship for a while. When Richard's "do-as-you-want", "freewheeling" style contradicts Beckett's procedurally conservative style, arguments ensue and so do sparks. Is it dangerous, or is it romantic?
