HBO's TV movie is based on the true story of Andrei Chikatilo, the Soviet serial killer.The plot depicts a Soviet criminal police officer who spent eight years tracking down an extremely vicious serial killer who killed fifty-two women and children in a remote southern train station between 1982 and 1990. The period coincides with political and economic changes in the Soviet Union and the way the police handle cases is constantly changing, so the detective's investigation encounters unprecedented difficulties and the identity of the killer becomes a mystery. To make matters worse, he discovers a government secret during his investigation, and the only person left to support him is Colonel Fetiso, an expert in political strategy.
