Dr Harry Dalton (Pierce Brosnan) is a volcanologist at the U.S. Geological Survey, and this time he's assigned to inspect a small town on Dante's Peak, a dormant volcano near Washington. Harry arrives in town just as the mayor, Rachel (Linda Hamilton), is hosting a celebration because the town has just won the second best place award in the nation for the best place to live. Rachel and her two children show Harry around, passing by Hot Springs Lake, where Harry notices that the water is too acidic and discovers two boiled floating corpses. Harry senses that the volcano is in danger of erupting and suggests that Rachel issue an early warning; however, Paul, Harry's boss, who is travelling with him, thinks he is overreacting and intends to return home after a week's worth of exploration, and the town council refuses to issue an early warning for a variety of beneficial reasons. However, just one night, the town's water is suddenly contaminated with sulphur, a precursor to a volcanic eruption, and Rachel immediately initiates a universal evacuation plan, yet her mother refuses to evacuate from the mountainside. Just then, the volcano has erupted unstoppably...
