John (Channing Tatum), a U.S. Army special Forces soldier, meets savanna (Amanda Seyfried), a student on vacation in his hometown. Savannah was friendly to John's coin-collecting father, whom he had little contact with as an adult. Their vacation ended soon after, when John promised Savannah that his tour of duty would end in a year, and they never parted. Overseas troops were often stationed in remote areas, and John could only communicate with Savannah through affectionate letters, in which they dreamed of one day being together. When the September 11th attacks hit and John had to extend his military service, the relationship between the two was in crisis, but they soon reconciled. When John returned to the army, he did not hear from Savannah for a long time. Instead, he waited for her dear John letter. When the brokenhearted sorrowful pain did not heal, John was injured, in a coma before the moment, John actually thought of his father's collection of those coins. Years later, when John saw Savannah again, he discovered the secret behind the dear John letter...
