What should have been a 10-minute bank robbery crime turns into a 12-hour tug-of-war. Sonny (Al Pacino) is kind of the unluckiest bank robber in American history. One summer afternoon, Sonny and his companion Sylar (John Cazale) broke into the Brooklyn Bank in New York City, ready to commit robbery. The bank has just completed a transaction, and there is no cash in the vault. The unlucky Sonny and Sylar turn to hostage-taking and confront the police with their demands. But four hours later, the scene of the robbery was made as lively as an amusement park by onlookers and frazzled police. Sonny's questioning of the police as he walked out of the bank actually won the applause of the crowd, and eight hours later, the bank robbery was broadcast live on a television program, and everyone was as happy as if they were making a movie. As night falls and the hostages develop Stockholm Syndrome, what will be the end of this farce?
