Set in 2019, the story will explore two questions: at what point does kidnapping not count as kidnapping, and if your wife isn't your wife?After a series of unexpected events lands Dorothy 'Dot' Lyon (Juno Temple) in a tangle with the authorities, the seemingly quintessential Midwestern housewife suddenly returns to a life she thought she'd left behind.North Dakota Sheriff Roy Tillman (Jon Hamm) has been searching for Dot for a long time, and as a rancher, preacher, and law enforcement officer, Roy believes that he is the law, and therefore above the law.On Roy's side is his loyal but irresponsible son, Gator (Joe Keery), who is desperate to prove himself to his remarkable father. Unfortunately, Gator is beyond redemption. So, in pursuit of Dot, Roy recruits Ole Munch (Sam Spruell), a drifter of mysterious origins.As her deepest secrets begin to unravel, Dot tries to protect her family from her own past, but her doting and well-meaning husband Wayne (David Rysdahl) keeps turning to his mother Lorraine Lyon (Jennifer Jason Leigh) for help. As the CEO of the largest debt collection agency in the United States, the Queen of Debt is not happy with her son's choice of wife and doesn't miss an opportunity to voice her disapproval. However, when Dot's unusual behavior comes to the attention of Minnesota State Trooper Indira Olmstead (Richa Moorjani) and North Dakota State Trooper Witt Farr (Lamorne Morris), Lorraine appoints her in-house counsel Danish Graves (Dave Foley ) to help her daughter-in-law. After all, family is family. But Dot has an uncanny knack for survival. Faced with adversity, she's about to show why one should never anger her as a mother.
