Richard is a pilot who works in a bar after leaving the army. He meets and falls in love with his colleague Barbara (Anna Massey). Richard, a gruff man, is fired after a quarrel with his boss, leaving his penniless wife Brenda (Barbara Leigh-Hunt). Brenda, who runs a matchmaking agency, gives Richard a friendly welcome and slips some money into his pocket. A few days later, Brenda is defiled and strangled with a tie by her and Richard's mutual friend Bob (Barry Foster), who turns out to be a notorious tie strangler in London.Brenda's dead, and Richard's the prime suspect. In order to push the greater crime to Richard, Bob took the opportunity to kill Barbara, for a time Richard became the object of the city wanted, and finally caught. Oxford (Alec McCowen), who is in charge of the case, thinks something is wrong, and after his wife's suggestion, he discovers that the real culprit has been revealed.
