Heidi (Anouk Steffen), an orphan, is sent up to the Alps by her aunt Didi (Anna Hynes) to live with her grandfather (Bruno Ganz), who lives alone in the mountains far from the town. The lively Hildy is a fish out of water here, not only gaining the friendship of Peter (Quirin Agrippi), a sheep farmer, and the affection of her lonely grandfather, but also getting along with Peter's family down the mountain. One day, when Heidi and Peter are tending sheep in the mountains, her aunt suddenly appears and sells Heidi to the Zessemann family in Frankfurt. From then on, Heidi, who is illiterate, becomes the companion of Miss Clara (Isabelle Altmann). Clara loses her mother at a young age, falls ill and can no longer stand, so she is confined to a wheelchair in the mansion. Her father (Maxime Memet) is always away and rarely comes home, so Clara sees Heidi as a lifesaver. Will Heidi be able to adapt to the new life of the Zessemans? Will grandfather and Peter, who are far away, ever see each other again? Is there any hope for Clara's leg to get better?
