Jed Vance (Gabriel Besso), from southern Ohio, is a Yale Law student and former Marine. He was on the verge of securing his dream job when an accident at home in the Appalachian Mountains forced him to return to the home he had tried so hard to escape. At home, Jed is surrounded by complicated family relationships, especially his temperamental mother bev (Amy Adams), who is suffering from drug addiction. What he faces also reminds him of his grandmother (Glen Rose), who he calls her, a tough, intelligent woman who takes on the responsibility of raising him. Amid the shock of the present and the memories of the past, Jed came to understand the indelible mark his family had left on his life.
