A young boy, Hugo (Asa Butterfield), is born mechanically inclined. He boards in the clock tower of a Parisian train station and occasionally goes to a toy store to steal parts to tinker with a robot left behind by his father (Jude Law). On one occasion, he is caught red-handed by shopkeeper Georges Méliès (Ben Kingsley), who is afraid of a patrolman (Sacha Baron Cohen) with a hunting dog. He is distraught that George has taken a mechanical manual, a relic of Hugo's father's, and trails it to George's home, where he befriends his adopted daughter, Isabella (Chloë Moretz), whom he pleads with to help him keep the manual. Isabella, on the other hand, finds this odd, and the two pair up to explore the mystery. The signature of the repaired robot's painting shows George's name, making them suspicious. Finally they discover a mysterious cabinet full of paintings in George's home and discover George's life in the library's movie books. A man in the know reveals himself and adds to the mystery of their fantasy adventure ......
