The show is based on the novel of the same name by author, science editor and advertising copywriter Bonnie Gammers.Set in the early 1950s, when society generally views women as belonging in the home rather than in the professional sphere, Elizabeth Zott (Brie Larson) aspires to be a scientist in a male-dominated world. She works in a laboratory as an assistant to renowned scientist Calvin Evans (Lewis Pullman), and the two share an unusual chemistry. However, when Elizabeth discovers that she is pregnant, alone, and fired from the lab, she puts her dreams on hold and is inspired with the unique ingenuity of a single mother. Elizabeth accepts a job as the host of a television cooking show and begins to teach a nation of neglected housewives and men who are suddenly attentive listeners a great deal of knowledge beyond the recipe, as well as a constant desire to learn more about the world of cooking. Elizabeth is also eager to get back to her true favorite field: science.
