In a small American town, Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), the leader of the local Boy Scouts and popular with the teenagers, is elected as the new senator to Washington. He meets his father's old friend, fellow senator Joseph Paine (Claude Rains), and becomes infatuated with Joseph's beautiful daughter. Joseph asks Jefferson to draft a proposal and has his secretary, Clarissa Saunders (Jean Arthur), assist Jefferson. Jefferson is determined to take on the group with his own little strength to change the corrupt political environment. Will he succeed or not? How will Mr Smith's journey to Washington end?
