The sudden departure of her husband has left Roberta (Meryl Streep) in deep pain. Like most housewives, Roberta's entire world is her husband and family, and now that both of those things have crumbled into pieces, how can the not-so-young Roberta live with herself?Sad as she was, she had to get on with her life, and with her two children in tow, Roberta moved her family to East Harlem, New York, where she began a new life as a violin teacher. Roberta was convinced that the arts could cultivate people's emotions, and that even children who had never been trained in the arts would be able to empathize with the beautiful sound of the violin. But the leaders of the school where Roberta teaches do not think so, and they continue to reduce Roberta's education funding, but this has not shaken Roberta's determination.
