Eliza doolittle, the flower girl, was handsome and clever, but she came from a poor family. She hawked flowers on the street every day to earn some money to support the family. One day, eliza's vulgar voice caught the attention of professor higgins, a linguist, who boasted that, with his training, a flower girl could become a lady. Eliza felt that what the professor said was an opportunity for her, so she came to him and asked him to train her. Pickering, a friend of the professor's, made a bet with him that if eliza could attend the ambassador's garden party in six months 'time as your wife without being found out, Pickering would be willing to bear all the costs of the experiment and eliza's tuition. Not to be outdone, he started with the most basic letter sounds. Higgins was an energetic, scientific scholar who could not sleep or eat in everything he was interested in. His heart was open, and he bore no malice; but, like a child, he trained eliza with perfect indifference to the feelings of others.
