This is the first documentary film by the American documentary filmmaker Robert Flaherty, the "father of documentary", which documents the daily life of the Nanook family, Inuit leaders near Inukjuak in Hudson Bay, Quebec, Canada, from August 1920 to August 1921. Scenes of daily life during this period, including trading with whites, catching fish, hunting walrus seals, cooking over a stove fire, and building an igloo, pioneered the beginnings of anthropological social video documentation. There was widespread controversy over the posing and reenactment of scenes in this film, such as concealing the fact that the Nanooks usually hunted with shotguns and deliberately showing traditional Inuit spear hunting, or removing half of the light from the igloo to capture the early morning rise of the Nanook family inside the igloo.
