Five years after the end of the American Civil War, Captain Jefferson Calkidd (Tom Hanks), a veteran of three wars, now travels from town to town as a newspaper reader, sharing the best news from around the world with local residents. In the Texas plains, he meets Johanna (Helena Zegel), a ten-year-old girl who was abducted and adopted by the Kiowa Indians six years ago. Joanna is hostile to a world she has never experienced and is forced to return to her aunt and uncle. Captain Kidd promised to escort the girl back to where she belonged by law. They must travel hundreds of miles through the harsh wilderness, and the pair face enormous challenges from both humans and nature as they search for a place they can both call home.The film is based on Paulette Giles' novel of the same name.
