A 9-year-old girl named Phoebe (Elle Fanning) joins the school drama group to play the title character in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and is praised by miss Dougal (Patricia Clarkson), a teacher. But phoebe, who is not in the theater, has a lot of problems, getting into trouble for spitting at classmates and not being able to control her behavior. As Phoebe's mother Hillary (Felicity Shafman) refuses to acknowledge that she has ocD, the tension between Hillary and her husband Peter (Bill Pullman) escalates. Meanwhile, Phoebe's symptoms grow worse, the line between vision and reality in her head blurs, and the school becomes dissatisfied with Miss Dougall's methods of teaching the children.
