In a nursing home, Mr. Gutman (Christopher Plummer), a Jewish man in his old age, groans and wakes up from his sleep. His memory is fading, and he has nearly forgotten even his wife's death not long ago. But his wife's departure also seems to help him remove the last bit of his ties, and he sneaks out of the nursing home with the help of a friend. Gutman was carrying a letter from a friend, which wrote down the things he needed to pay attention to along the way and the biggest purpose of the trip.
