Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman), a talented and ambitious teenager, attends an aristocratic preparatory school in Houston. While Max is a newcomer to the prestigious school, he has his heart set on the clubs. With his superior intelligence, he soon becomes comfortable in the various clubs. However, he neglects his homework and soon faces the threat of being expelled from the school. By chance, he becomes friends with successful business tycoon Herman Blum (Bill Murray) and learns a lot about life. But it all ends at the hands of the talented and beautiful schoolteacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams). Max is so deep in love that he can't help himself.
