Marty, a sixth grader, and his family try to help Judd Travers, Shiloh's previous owner, who saves himself from a near-fatal truck accident. Marty and his family try to look on the bright side and trust Judd to correct his mistakes, but others in the community are sure Judd will never change. Hoping to save Shiloh the way he saved Judd's other dogs, Marty begins to help Judd care about animals. However, when Judd is suspected of murdering someone who has already disappeared, Marty worries that he is putting himself and Shiloh in a dangerous situation.
