In 73 BC, Spartacus (Kirk Douglas), a slave from the Ancient Roman province of Libya, falls in love with Valinia (Jean Simmons) at the Capua Fighting School. In the same year, spartacus led the slaves of the fighting school to revolt and win their freedom. Spartacus and Valinia were reunited and married. The revolt shocked the Roman establishment and intensified the contradictions between the aristocracy and the populism in the Senate. Aristocratic general Crassus (Laurence Olivier) usurped the power of the chief consul, Charles Laughton (Laughton), and became a dictatorship. In order to defeat Crassus, Gracchus planned to secretly release the slave army. Crassus paid off the pirates and called back two armies that had fought abroad. Spartacus was outnumbered on three sides. Tens of thousands of slaves died. He was captured by Crassus along with his wife and 6,000 surviving comrades. At the last minute, with the help of Gracho, the situation changed again.
