Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell), 39, is jobless and has been dawdling at his mother Nancy's (Mary Steenburgen) house.Dale Doback, 40 ( John Reilly) is also an older man living with his father, Robert (Richard Jenkins), and living off his father's charity. Nancy falls in love with Robert at first sight and moves into Robert's house after their marriage, and Brennan moves in with his mother, and is forced to live with Dale as a stepbrother from then on. The duo gradually become best buddies from mutual hostility, and have a lot of fun working together against Brennan's brilliant younger brother Derek (Adam Scott).
