Based on the novel of the same name by Rhidian Brook, the story is set in Hamburg, Germany, shortly after world war ii in 1946. British colonel lewis was stationed in the city to help with reconstruction work, and moved to Hamburg with his wife Rachel and youngest son Edmund, 11.But to Rachel's fury, they lived in the same big house as a German family. Rachel and lewis's eldest son was killed in a German bombing and she hated the germans bitterly. The German family, a father and his 16-year-old daughter, lost their wife (mother) in the war and were not kind to the British. But lewis insisted on this arrangement, and everyone had to make do with sharing the same roof.Post-world war ii Germany was a chaotic place, with conflicts between the occupying forces and the germans, and some germans trying to regroup as nazis. Rachael concern, however, is the problem in her family, her husband work too busy, no time take care of her children, she is the only person who can communicate the German widower (actually, she didn't know her husband is so hardworking, but also to forget the pain of lost children), slowly, the two initially hostile to each other people fall in love......
