During world war ii, Japanese troops occupied a prison camp on the Burmese border. Out of strategic need, the Japanese army will be in Burma and Thailand border to build a bridge, at the same time hope the prisoners of war in the camp to help, but the British representative of the prisoners of war colonel niccolson (Alec Guinness ) that this is a violation of the Geneva convention refused to enforce. So Nicholson and others were put in detention, but without Nicholson's leadership, the prisoners were passive, and work on the bridge stalled because of inadequate Japanese design.  the Japanese had no choice but to release nicolson and others, after the release of nicolson feel in the destruction of all the war why not do some construction, so began to put into the work of building a bridge. Meanwhile, the escaped American prisoner shields (William Holden) receives a special mission from the Allies, which is to blow up the bridge on the day it is built.
