An adventure story about love and friendship in which two children support each other through the rough times of their lives. Lane Furland, who has not spoken a word in five years after witnessing his father's death at the age of nine, suffers his first disaster when he falls from a bridge on a riverbank and magically falls into a land of fear and death called the Dust Factory. In a world both familiar and unfamiliar, Ryan meets Marlena, a precocious beauty who steals her heart.
