The film is based on the life of Ernie Davis, the first African American to win the Heisman Trophy, the National Football League's highest award. He led Syracuse University to two national championships in 1960 and 1961. But after he graduated, he was unable to play professional football because he was diagnosed with leukemia, and he sadly died the following year.
