In 1857, he was a black slave in Kansas when his master clashed with John Brown, a prominent abolitionist leader, who took Henry, thinking he was a girl, gave him a dress to wear and nicknamed him "Little Onion." Along the way Henry struggled to survive and gradually integrated into the Brown family. It was not until 1859 that he was involved in the famous Brown-initiated event, the Harpers Ferry Raid, which was the main trigger for the American Civil War.
