Mr. Alvin Streeter (Richard Farnsworth) is in his seventies, and not only is he withdrawn and eccentric, but his eyesight is also deteriorating. Mr. Streeter lives with his daughter Rose (Sissy Spacek), a father and daughter who live in poverty, but with peace and joy.The calm atmosphere in Mr. Streeter's home is shattered by the news that his older brother Lyle (Harry Dean Stanton) is seriously ill. Although the two brothers haven't seen each other for nearly a decade due to a former conflict, now that Mr. Streeter is entering his old age, and having experienced all the fickleness and vagaries of the life force, Mr. Streeter decides that it's time to mend the rift between the brothers.
