Set in the American Midwest in the 1950s, the story expresses the creator's view of life through telling a typical American family story. The hero is Jack (Hunter McCracken), an 11-year-old boy who is one of three brothers whose family is transformed by the death of a stern, gruff father (Brad Pitt) and a tender, no-action mother (Jessica Chastain). As an adult Jack (Sean Penn) comes to terms with his troubled life, confronts his own memories as he considers his life trajectory and begins to see his parents, his family, his childhood in a different light. He eventually forgives his father and develops a deeper understanding of life, life, and faith.
